What U-100 units mean

U-100 units are a volume marking. On a U-100 syringe, 100 units equals 1 mL, 50 units equals 0.5 mL, and 10 units equals 0.1 mL. The unit mark does not say how many mg or mcg are present until concentration is known.

Concentration (mg/mL) = peptide amount (mg) / diluent volume (mL)
Target amount (mg) = target amount (mcg) / 1000
Draw volume (mL) = target amount (mg) / concentration (mg/mL)
U-100 units = draw volume (mL) * 100
Amount per U-100 unit (mcg/unit) = concentration (mcg/mL) / 100

Example calculation

If a solution has a concentration of 2.5 mg/mL, then 0.10 mL equals 250 mcg. Because 0.10 mL is 10 U-100 units, this example also equals 25 mcg per unit.

Common mistakes

The key mistake is treating a U-100 unit as a mass amount. Units measure volume. A change in concentration changes the amount contained in the same number of units.
